The separation of air and oil is done in a separate tank. Most oil is separated from compressed air by centrifugal force (as happens in a clothes dryer). The rest of the oil (mostly droplets and oil mist) is separated by a separator element that looks like a large filter. Oily air flows through the separator element. The element separates the oil from the compressed air. The separated oil is collected at the bottom of the separator and removed by a scavenging line. It sucks the collected oil back into the compressor components.
